Teamwork Shines around Brevard

Sunday May 7th 2017 marked another successful & inspiring Eat My Crust 5K Fun Run & Walk held in Viera, Florida. The 6th Annual Eat My Crust 5K Run/Walk raised money for the Viera High School Athletic Department, the Special Olympics of Brevard County & the Early Steps Program. The event was coordinated by Viera Pizza and a team of volunteers, sponsors and leaders across Brevard County, Florida.

Stories of Victory uniquely inspiring

Lifelong Florida resident, Amy B. reports that "every race has its own story" ....

Every race has its own story

It is evident from the energy of the event that those who participate have a great time and will move mountains to get out of bed at 6 am on a Sunday to walk, run or simply get involved & be active. Many have physically trained for months, while others have had their calendars marked for a year to join the fun. Families participated in the event and realized that they don't have to be trained athletes to put on tennis shoes and get moving for a 5K.

This year, Team Hungry for Health was represented by runners and walkers excited to get active for health.

Christine F. proudly reports her family's success; it was a "GREAT 5K race. Alex set a personal record by shaving 4 minutes off his last race 2 months ago and Bianca came in at 27:05 shaving 1 minute 36 seconds off her personal record." Her daughter's community sports team also participated "Soccer Team Storm U12 girls finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th out of 21 in their age group."

Christine reports "and I trained Alex the last two months so congrats to me!" It is clearly evident that at whatever pace participants joined in, the event was a victory for all!

Hungry for Health also teamed up with the office staff of The Advanced Surgical & Weight Loss Institute.

Their team had fun designing team shirts for the event and office Manager Danielle N. reported that she'd love to do this more often. Team Hungry for Health came in 8th place in the Team (Co-Ed) Competition and results from the race can be found on the Running Zone website.

Race participants, Sponsors and a team of volunteers worked together for a common goal: to create an atmosphere of support in a community. Beneficiaries of the race included the Viera Athletic Department, Special Olympics of Brevard County along with the Early Steps Program. VHS Athletic Director, Chris Gallagher reports "it's always a great event. The Viera Pizza team had a vision 6 years ago to start something. It has been a tremendous success thanks to the generous efforts and support of Mike Acosta, Nicole Fry, Brittany Streufert and the Running Zone. The sponsors, participants and volunteers have made it happen. It is truly a great community event."

Will Run for Pizza

The post race celebration may be a significant reason why attendance continues to grow year after year. Runners and walkers are welcomed onto the home stretch of the race with the alluring temptation of fresh, hot Viera Pizza.

Healthy post race food choices such as cut up fruit, easy to digest carbohydrates, and plenty of hydration options line the field. The post race awards atmosphere gives the participants an opportunity to come together and congratulate friends, family and teammates on a job well done.

As the proverb reads, "It takes a village to raise a child"... community events like this influence and shape our children as well as the community as a whole. For this commitment to teamwork and a common goal, Hungry for Health salutes YOU - all the participants, volunteers, community leaders, coaches, educators, writers, photographers and businesses that made this year's Eat My Crust 5K another great success. May the legacy of community health, support and fun be evident for generations to come.
